Make Sure Your Web Site Is Right Before You Advertise

Recently a customer spent a pretty hefty sum of money to promote his web site. I knew something was wrong when he contacted me three weeks later saying he hadn’t sold a single product.

His site looked good. A professional designer had given it a great look with slick graphics. Unfortunately, when I went in search of the product he was advertising, it took five or six clicks to find it.

Here is what happened to prospects and why the site wasn’t selling anything:
1. The prospect sees the ad.
2. She clicks to the site.
3. She is greeted with a doorway page.
4. When she finds the link at the bottom of the doorway page she is taken to a home page with very little information on it.
5. If she clicks on the “home” link she gets the doorway page again.
6. If she clicks on the “about us” link she gets the home page she is already on.
7. One more click and she might find the product page with the item she came looking for.

How many customers will look through page after page to find the product or service you advertised? Not many. Click rates go down dramatically after the first page. Hardly anyone will click three levels deep.

Moral of the story: have your opening web page clearly promote whatever you are advertising. Otherwise, your ad dollars may be wasted.

In today’s rocky economy, people aren’t willing to throw money at a product/service they know nothing about. Many online shoppers spend hours looking for the item that is exactly what they want. Your product/service could be exactly what they’re looking for, but with scant, uninformative copy, how are they going to know?

So it’s time to make a few changes, nothing too painful. You don’t have to throw out your old copy and start from scratch. With some minor alterations, your copy can inform, motivate and charge prospects to take action and buy.

Here are a few changes you can make to improve the way your copy sells:

Give the Most Important Info First — Don’t force people to wade through two pages of copy before they can discover what you’re all about. Get to the point right up front, in the headline, subheading, and first few paragraphs. If you have too much filler copy in the beginning and don’t start getting to the point until later, all that copy your visitors read will be lost on them. It will have been out of context because you didn’t provide them with a context.

First Things First — Ever heard of “Inverted Pyramid Style” writing? It means starting with the most important sentence and following with lesser sentences. But not too many. Keep your paragraphs short so they don’t overwhelm the reader.

Cut Words — Web copy should use about half the word count or less than conventional writing, so keep it short and too the point. This isn’t the great American novel. Your goal is to make sure your audience can understand every word you say while reading quickly. If they have to stop to get a dictionary because you used too many cryptic words or jargon, you’ll lose their interest.

No Sub Par Subheadings — Use only meaningful subheadings. Your subheadings should serve as an outline for your copy, making it easier for the reader to remember important points and gain and accurate overview of the products or services. If your subheadings are well-placed and meaningful, no one should have to read your copy twice.

One Idea Per Paragraph — Don’t load your paragraphs with ideas. Avoid confusing the reader by separating each idea into its own paragraph. This will also help you keep paragraphs shorter. Limiting paragraphs to one idea helps readers digest information a little at a time, promoting comprehension and recall.

Use Bullets — When presenting information, it is helpful to separate the text with bullet points. Bulleted lists are easier to read than entire paragraphs, and the differentiation shows readers that they should pay special attention to bulleted points. In fact, readers are known for skipping over paragraphs and going straight for the bulleted text, so make whatever information is in bullets essential to motivating the sale.

Highlight Keywords — You’re going to get a lot of “scanners” visiting your site. These are people who don’t read word for word, but glance over text looking or important information. Highlight keywords so they will know where to find this information.

Use Hype Where Hype is Needed — Hype is like opera. People either love it or loathe it. So be careful where you use it. With certain products, hype has been known to reduce credibility, but with others, it increases excitement and motivates purchases. But if you want to add that punch here and there in your copy, use hype like paprika; just a pinch to tweak the flavor. An exclamation point here, a phrase in caps there, and you’ve got just enough to satisfy any palate.

Make Your Corporate Website Design A Winner

Make Your Corporate Website Design a Winner

An impressive website will go a long way in creating a killer first impression about your company.Visit Here Now http://free-websitemaking.blogspot.com

A few simple tricks make the difference between a good corporate website design and a great one. Here are 10 tips to consider, before you hire that web designer:

Establish goals

Often, your website is the first point of contact for your customers. Therefore, the most critical part of corporate web design is to establish the impact the website must have on visitors. Do you want to close a sale, generate a database or provide information? The corporate website design process must support this goal.

Remember who you’re talking to

If you’re in the business of selling kids’ storybooks, a stuffy looking website with big words is a strict no-no. If your website is directed at your trade partners, make sure that information on products, distribution and partnerships is easy to find.

Value their time

When was the last time you waited patiently for a flash intro to download? Remember that lots of web surfers still use low speed modems of 28K or 56K. Your first page is the most important, make sure visitors get there quickly and stay.

A site map is a great idea, especially if you have lots to say. Someone who quickly finds what he or she is looking for is more likely to return.

Make it enjoyable

Good corporate website design is all about avoiding customer pain points. Stay away from irritants like music (unless you’re in that business), Java pop-ups and redirects to other pages. If you need to have any of these for some unfathomable reason, make sure there’s an option to turn it off.

Make it look good

That’s the whole game, right? A smart website will make the business, however small, look good. The corporate website design process must blend aesthetic elements and create a distinct visual identity. Ensure that your logo gets due respect and the usage of colors and other details are in keeping with company image. Tickers are tacky unless they’re mean to display dynamic information like stock quotes.

Make it sound good

Web copy is an art by itself. Most web surfers have limited attention spans and will move on quickly if your website doesn’t come straight to the point. While developing your corporate website design, devote special care to the copy. Does it say all you want, quickly and clearly? Is it well written, and free of spelling and grammatical errors? If there’s too much content, it’s a good idea to split it across two pages – no one likes to scroll down too long, and never from side to side!

Keep it simple

A consistent and instinctive layout works best. No one appreciates having to “learn” how to navigate each page. Menus on the top and left-hand side have stood the test of time.

Make sure it works

Before you announce your website to the world, check that it works on all browsers. Remember what it’s like not to find that newly advertised lipstick on the shelves – well, a website that doesn’t show up is a similar feeling!

Design a 404

You might wonder at this one – but it would be useful if your corporate web design process also included a custom 404 page. Standard “page not found” messages are such a yawn and leave the users wondering whether their Internet connection really works. Instead, let your visitors know that they’ve reach the right site, but not the right page. Include a link back to the home page or site map.

Don’t mess with your visitor

Invasion of the worst kind! Some designers will use JavaScript to automatically resize the user’s window so that the website looks best. Avoid doing that if you don’t want to lose all your visitors. Instead, decide what window size and resolution is likely to work best for you, but remember you can’t be everything to everyone. Using a resolution of 800×600 is still a good idea.

The website design decision is an important one, and you have several ways to approach it. Professional web designers abound, and some like LogoWorks® specialize in corporate website design for small businesses. If you’re the creative or do-it-yourself type, you might like to use ready templates, like those offered by Design Galaxy or Template Monster.Visit Here Now http://free-websitemaking.blogspot.com

Part 3 of your Free Guide to Building a Website

By now you should have the hang of adding pictures and editing text in the existing text boxes. You should also know how to add new pages to the site by adding them to the menu (see previous tutorial). Now let’s look at adding extra elements to a page and adding pages without them appearing in the menu – it’s the next step to help you create your own website using Webeden. Lets do it – here’s 10 steps to adding extra elements to your pages

Step 1

Click on Files to open the File Manager and then select the Library tab and click on Animations / Handwritten. Click on “Circle it” and select Use this. The animation will be added to the page. By default, the line drawn is white. Select the animation object and in the Editor dialog click on the Style tab and change the colour to black. You can also resize and rotate the animation on the Info tab (see previous page). Position the circle over the top of an area of the page that you want to draw attention to, like a picture.

Step 2

Now add the arrow from the Handwritten section in the same way. Use the Rotate feature on the Info tab to enable freehand rotation using the object’s handles. When you add a page to your site, you can choose from a list of different page types. There are different templates readily available so you don’t have to design a complicated page from the ground up, which makes for a handy shortcut when you’re website building. For example, the blog/news page will create a ready made weblog for you, together with an integrated editor to allow you to add items.

Step 3

You can also add links only, so a button appears in the menu, but no page is created (the opposite of adding a page, but not having it visible). There’s even an image gallery – one tip with images you upload is to ensure the dimensions aren’t larger than you need to keep download times down, somthing you should take not of when you create your own website.

Step 4

Now click on Insert and select Button Link. This will add a bevelled image to the page. Move it to within the left column. Click on the Link tab in the Editor dialog and enter the URL you want to link to, like http://www.webeden.co.uk/. Click on Apply and you’ll see that the text on the button changes also. Click on the Style tab and you can now change the text on the button. Do it in this order, as changing the link will overwrite the text.

Step 5

The next step on your website building fast track is to click on the More arrow in the Editor dialog (top right) and select Body Text Box (you can hover over each icon to get a tooltip). Drag the text box to the left column, underneath the button we just inserted. Use the handles at the corners and bottom of the text frame to resize it to fit within the column. Now select the Style tab and click on the Background button to enable a background for the text frame, and select a colour from the drop down menu to the right, and do the same for the border.

Step 6

An alterative when you make your own website to using the text frame’s background and border is to add a background frame, such as a shape with bevelled edges from the Library, and then add a text box on top, which will show the frame beneath it through it.

Step 7

Now go to Insert / New page and click on the Add new page button; just make it a blank page. Label the page “Chat” and then disable the radio button in the Page visible column. This will add the page to the site without it being added into your automatically generated menu. We will add a link to this new page within the master page, but to do this, you must create the page first as you cannot add a link to a non-existent page, even if you know what you are going to call it. You can still access the page to edit it from the Pages menu – a perfect website building tip.

Step 8

On the new page, double click in the title text box to edit the text and change it to “Chat to other user online” and then single click on the main text box and click on the Delete icon.

Step 9

Now click on the Files button to bring up the File Manager and from the library, select Functional and add the Chat object to the page. Close the File Manager and then resize the chat object to fill the content element of the page underneath the headline. Click on Design / Page master and remember to save the page when it asks you. Always remember this if you want to quickly build your own website!

Step 10

Add a new button link and drag it to the top right of the page, above the date. With the button selected, choose the Link tab in the Editor and select the Pages icon (it looks like horizontal lines). This allows you to link to a page on your site. Select Chat from the drop down menu and click Apply. As before the button’s text will change.

Step 11

In the Style tab change the button text to “Chat to other users”. Click on Save and Exit.

Step 12

Change to the View my site, so you can see the site as a user, rather than editing it, and you will see that we have added a fully featured chat feature to our site, all within the space of a few clicks. What an amazing what to create a website that looks professional and advanced.

Expert tip

When you add a page to WebEden, you can choose from a list of different page types. There are different templates readily available so you don’t have to design a complicated page from the ground up. For example, the blog/news page will create a ready made weblog for you, together with an integrated editor to allow you to add items. You can also add links only, so a button appears in the menu, but no page is created (the opposite of adding a pgae, but not having it visible, as we did in Step 3). There’s even an image gallery – one tip with images you upload is to ensure the dimensions aren’t larger than you need to keep download times down.

That’s all for now

Check in for part 4 to find out how to add some really cool stuff to make sure that you can build a website, and it’s the best one possible!
